Description

1891-P VAM-14 Doubled Ear, Far Date Discovery 2012. Die pair: 14 III2 12 - C3a (Doubled Ear, Far Date) (190) Obverse III2 12: Slightly doubled ear at the right inside and bottom, where a secondary hub impression left extra thickness on Liberty's ear contours. Date set further right than normal, creating a wider gap between the numeral 1 and Liberty's neck — the "far date" designation. DPIS: LE4/RH5 The Die Pair Identification System coding LE4/RH5 provides a shorthand diagnostic — Left Eagle position 4, Right Hand position 5 — allowing collectors to narrow attribution by examining specific reverse reference points without full die study. DPIS codes function as fingerprints that streamline identification when working through bags or rolls. Philadelphia Mint production. Doubled ear varieties on Morgan Dollars require careful examination under magnification, as the doubling on ear contours is subtle compared to bold hub doubling on date digits. Combined with the far date displacement, VAM-14 offers two independent obverse diagnostics.
