Description
1889-P VAM-5B Far Date, Pitted Rev., Gouge Olive Branch, Clashed Obverse n Discovered by John Coxe, November 2006. This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan Vam. 5B III25 · C3a (Far Date, Pitted Rev., Gouge Olive Branch, Clashed Obverse n) (190) Obverse III25– Clashed die with partial incuse n of In from reverse showing next to Liberty's neck. Notes: Like the 1889-P VAM-22, the 1889-P VAM-5A was clashed but the neck clash atop the right wing is further left on this one. The VAM-22 is not an advanced state of the 1889-P VAM-5A. A partial n (from "In") transfer is visible along Liberty's neck. To finalize the attribution, as if the pitting was insufficient, there are very visible die scratches between the eagle's neck and left wing. Locating one of these can be a formidable challenge. They appear to be much rarer than the Top-100 barwings.
