1889-CC VAM-5A

Description

The 1889-CC VAM-5A is one of the more dramatically die-broken varieties of one of the most celebrated key dates in the Morgan dollar series. With a mintage of only approximately 350,000 coins, the 1889-CC stands as the lowest-mintage Carson City business strike in the entire Morgan dollar run, commanding significant premiums at every grade level. Classified III2 4 - C3d with DPIS 177 and named Far Date, Dropped C, Die Breaks O-E, this variety pairs the far-date obverse with a reverse C3d die that developed a prominent die crack running from the left star over through ONE to DOLLAR. Additional small thin breaks appear left of the O in ONE, and several small die breaks are visible at the lower left outside and at the top of the middle serif of the E. VAM-5 uses the exact same die pair as VAM-5A, making the detailed diagnostic photos for VAM-5 directly applicable when attributing VAM-5A. The Carson City Mint produced silver dollars with a distinctive CC mint mark that carries both historical mystique and collector premium, and die-break varieties like VAM-5A add another layer of interest to an already storied coin.
