Error
Description
The 1888-P Morgan Dollar VAM-4, designated Doubled Reverse and honored as a Hot 50 Morgan Dollar VAM, was discovered by George Farnsworth in February 1976. The reverse shows hub doubling distributed across an exceptional range of design elements: the lower inside of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is doubled, as is the top inside of the N and E of UNITED, the O and L of DOLLAR, and the A and R of AMERICA. The eagle's wing, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the wreath all show displaced impressions. On the obverse, a die crack runs through the bottom of the date accompanied by a die chip — a diagnostic marker that tracks die progression and provides a second attribution path independent of the reverse doubling. The Hot 50 designation reflects the variety's visual impact and collector demand: the extensive reverse doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is among the most dramatic in the Philadelphia Morgan Dollar series. The 90% silver Morgan Dollar was produced at the Philadelphia Mint from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921.
