Description

Discovered by Jeff Oxman in December 1998, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-25 under classification III2 21 with a C3a reverse, titled Doubled Eyelid. The obverse shows slight doubling along the bottom edge of Liberty's eyelid, the right inside of the ear, the hair strand right of the ear, and the lower cotton leaf's left side. Date position is DPIS RH3 LH5, solidly in the normal range with a minor reverse slant. This variety is similar to 1887-O VAM-22 but with weaker doubling on stars and eyelid. The mintmark sits slightly high with a very slight rightward tilt. In late die state, a long minor cud develops across all of PLURIBUS, strongest above the I, providing a dramatic secondary diagnostic. The eyelid doubling requires comparison against an undoubled example, as the spread is subtle. Collectors should examine the lower eyelid edge first, then confirm with the ear and cotton leaf doubling.
