Description
1886-O VAM-5 Doubled 18 Discovered by George Mallis, July 1964. 5 III2 3 - C3a (Doubled 18) (181) Obverse III2 3- Short stem of original 1 projects below bottom crossbar. First 8 doubled to lower left of bottom loop. Closed 6. DPIS - Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: As of December 2012, only one example of this coin was known. The location of the discovery piece and the plate coin was not known. This coin has been searched for nearly 50 years by several dedicated VAM collectors with only the one example to show for the effort. Finding one of these would be the highlight of any collection. -- CLM, 12/2012. The 1886-O VAM-5 (presumably) comes with no clash or with just 1 clash (no letter transfer). A second clashing event made the 86-O VAM-5 an 86-O VAM-5A/B (no 5A are currently known). Apparently there was a third clashing when the dies were producing the 86-O VAM-5B. My example of the 5B only shows 2 clashes. BF 11/2024.
