1886-O VAM-28
Error
Description
Discovered by Jeff Oxman in February 2023, VAM-28 is a relatively recent addition to the 1886-O Morgan Dollar variety roster, featuring doubled arrows on the reverse. Classified as III2 20 - C3h with the obverse showing the date at the right edge of normal lateral position and reverse die pairing C3h, this variety is distinguished from the similar VAM-18 by a slightly different date position. The 1886-O Morgan Dollar, struck at the New Orleans Mint, is already a key date in the Morgan Dollar series — one of the scarcer issues that commands significant premiums in higher grades. The Die Pair Identification System (DPIS) designation RE3/C5 provides additional technical classification for researchers tracking die marriages systematically. The ongoing discovery of new Morgan Dollar VAMs well into the 2020s demonstrates the depth of this collecting specialty, with researchers like Oxman continuing to identify previously undocumented die marriages across every date and mint in the series.
