Description

Discovered in 2013 and cataloged at DPIS 181, the 1886-O Morgan Dollar VAM-1E2 exhibits a thread-like impression at the neck along with progressive die breaks on both the obverse and reverse. The obverse shows a die crack running along the top edge of the Phrygian cap on Liberty's head, while the reverse presents radial die cracks emanating from the rim. These structural die failures — both the neck thread impression and the crack patterns — define the die state and die condition markers that distinguish VAM-1E2 within the 1886-O attribution landscape. The New Orleans Mint struck Morgan Dollars in 90% silver, and the 1886-O issue is a well-collected date within the O-mint series. The combination of the thread-like neck impression and the die break progression across both sides makes VAM-1E2 a variety of interest for late-die-state Morgan Dollar collectors.
