Description
Smith Jr. discovered this New Orleans Morgan dollar in March 2004, classified 1B III21 with a C3a reverse, designated Clashed Obverse n and st. The obverse die shows a partial incuse n from In on the reverse next to Liberty's neck, along with a partial incuse st from Trust in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. These transferred letters were impressed when the dies struck each other without a planchet. True to the VAM-1 family, this variety lacks prominent distinguishing features beyond the clashing, making attribution more demanding. A small die chip noted in supplementary photos provides an additional diagnostic. The New Orleans Mint had a relatively high clash rate compared to Philadelphia, likely due to older equipment and less controlled production conditions.
