Discovered in 2009, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-19 under Classification 19 III2-12, C3b, with die pair 181. The obverse shows doubled date digits: the 1 is slightly doubled at the top left of the bottom crossbar, and the left 8 is doubled at the right bottom outside of the lower loop. The reverse features an O mint mark tilted to the left. While the formal VAM description and plate photograph might suggest a straightforward variety, experienced collectors have noted that this coin rewards careful examination far beyond what the minimal catalog entry implies, with additional die characteristics and subtle features that become apparent under close study. The 1886-O Morgan Dollar is one of the lower-mintage issues from the New Orleans Mint, making any documented variety from this date particularly noteworthy. Struck in the standard 90% silver, 10% copper composition, Morgan Dollars from the New Orleans facility carry the distinctive O mint mark on the reverse beneath the wreath.
