1884-S VAM-23A

Description

VAM-23A in the 1884-S Morgan Dollar series (III2 3 C3m: Very Far Date, S Set Right, Dbl Left Rev, Break in Left Wreath) shares the same die pair as VAM-23 but represents a later die state — distinguished from VAM-23 by the formation of a die break in the wreath opposite the space between the NI of UNITED, a stage-defining marker that does not appear in the earlier VAM-23 state. The reverse C3m die carries a Very Far Date and S mintmark set to the right in addition to doubling on the left reverse design elements. A DPIS designation of LE4/RH5 records the die pairing parameters for this variety. Discovered in March 2024 by Alan Scott, VAM-23A is among the more recently documented varieties in the 1884-S Morgan Dollar population, reflecting the continued active discovery of new die states within established VAM pairs. The 1884-S Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint under George T. Morgan's design. Collectors attributing this variety should specifically verify the wreath break opposite NI in UNITED, as this is the critical distinguishing marker separating VAM-23A from the earlier VAM-23 die state.
