Description

An 1884-S Morgan Dollar variety discovered in 2019 by kenny, VAM-13 is designated 18 in Denticles, Far Date, Die Chip Left Side Left Wreath. The die pair is identified as III2 4 - C3a, plate (187). The variety's name describes a combination of diagnostic features: the digits 18 in the date are positioned far enough left to partially overlap the border denticles — the small tooth-like projections along the rim — while the overall date sits further right than normal, qualifying for the "Far Date" classification. A die chip on the left side of the left wreath adds a third identifying characteristic to this die pair. The obverse die (III2 4) is primarily identified through these positional and damage features rather than through design doubling or other hub-related anomalies. The reverse die (C3a) represents a standard pairing. San Francisco Morgan Dollars from 1884 had a mintage of 3.2 million, modest by series standards, and die varieties from lower-mintage San Francisco issues attract collectors who value the combination of branch-mint scarcity and documented die provenance.
