Description

Discovered in 2019 by researcher jrfaust, the 1884-P VAM-8K documents a displaced field break across AME in the reverse inscription AMERICA, representing a late-stage die failure on this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar. Cataloged as III2 8-C3a (Far Date, Displaced Field Break AME) with die pairing number 187, the reverse die designated C3a exhibits a die crack running from the rim above the letter F through the tops of AMERICA, with a visible displaced field — a raised area where the metal has shifted — at the letters AME. The far date obverse classification indicates the date digits are positioned further from the rim than normal. Displaced field breaks occur when a die crack widens sufficiently that metal can flow into the widened gap during striking, producing a raised ridge or plateau adjacent to the crack line. On this variety, the break's location across AME places it in the upper right portion of the reverse, where the eagle's wing and surrounding inscription meet the rim. The 1884-P Morgan Dollar was struck during the Gilded Age, when the Philadelphia Mint was processing massive quantities of silver under the Bland-Allison Act. The 2019 discovery — over 135 years after the coin was struck — demonstrates that the Morgan Dollar VAM catalog continues to expand as researchers apply modern imaging technology to previously unexamined specimens.
