Description
VAM-1C in the 1884-P Morgan Dollar series (III2 1 C3a: Clashed Obverse n) records a clashed die on the obverse, where the partial incuse impression of the n from the word "In" on the reverse transferred to the obverse die and now appears next to Liberty's neck on struck coins. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet between them; the high-relief design elements of one die impress into the other, leaving mirror-image ghost impressions that appear as raised incuse marks on subsequently struck coins. The n visible on the obverse of VAM-1C coins is a direct transfer from the reverse legend, providing an unmistakable diagnostic once identified. The 1884-P Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint under George T. Morgan's design. Discovered in June 2008 by the VAMWorld member known as BOBCAGO, VAM-1C is straightforwardly attributable by examining the neck area of Liberty for the incuse n impression under moderate magnification.
