Error
Description
Discovered by Doug Bindner in 2012 with formal listing in 2014, this 1883 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is classified as 24B III2 24 - C3a (188) and designated Doubled 18-3, Scribbles on Forehead, Clashed Obverse n and st. The obverse die shows evidence of a second clashing: a partial incuse n from the reverse word In appears next to Liberty's neck, and a faint partial incuse of st from Trust shows in the hair vee of the lower hair edge. Scribbles on the forehead — irregular die scratches likely from die maintenance — provide an additional identifier. This variety was formerly cataloged as 1883-P VAM-1D before reassignment to the VAM-24 family. The reverse die (C3a) shows a faint diagonal polishing line at the bottom of the gap between the right bent wheat leaf and right top cotton leaf, with additional forehead scribbles. The clashed letter transfers of n and st require specific examination points and confirm the dies contacted each other without a planchet during the 1883 Philadelphia production run.
