Description

Laurence Galbraith discovered VAM-8A in August 2005, classifying it as III24 · C3e, entry 178 — Doubled Date, Bar Below Second 8, CC Set Right, Clashed Obverse n. On the obverse (III24), clash damage transferred a faint partial incuse n from the reverse legend as a short tick adjacent to Liberty's head and neck — the clashed n marking that defines the "8A" designation as a later die state than VAM-8. VAM-8A is earlier in the die progression than VAM-4A, placing it in a specific emission sequence within the 1883-CC clashed-die family. On the reverse (C3e), the large V-style CC mintmark is set to the right, with extra metal visible within the left C and a short arc of extra metal at the top right inside of the right C — the characteristic "Bar" features of this reverse die. The 1883-CC Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver Carson City Mint issue, from the Nevada facility that operated from 1870 to 1893 and whose coins are among the most collected in the Morgan Dollar series.
