Description

Cataloged as a 2015 discovery, VAM-33 of the 1882-S Morgan dollar is designated III2 3 C3a as Doubled 82, from die pair (187). This variety represents a possible earlier die state of VAM-3, sharing the same obverse type but displaying characteristics consistent with less die wear. Obverse die markers include die chips between the loops on the left 8, plus chips on the left and right side of the right 8, which also exhibits surface roughness on the left side of its lower loops. A die clash mark behind the cap provides further diagnostic evidence. The reverse is a normal IV S mintmark die of the C3a type with no die clash marks, indicating only the obverse experienced the clashing event. The relationship between VAM-33 and VAM-3 is significant for emission sequence study, as the earlier die state interpretation suggests VAM-33 specimens were struck before the die acquired additional wear that defines VAM-3. The 1882-S Morgan dollar was produced in large numbers at the San Francisco Mint, and the doubled 82 in the date provides the primary pickup point.
