Description

Discovered by Martin Field in October 1978, the 1882-S VAM-21 is catalogued as 21 III2 18 C3b — Doubled 882. The obverse III2 18 shows the first 8 doubled slightly at the left outside and right inside of its upper loop and at the right outside of its lower loop. The second 8 is doubled strongly at the left outside of its upper loop and at the right across both loops. The 2 is doubled in the same hub impression event. The reverse C3b classification identifies the mintmark position for this die marriage. The 1882-S had a San Francisco mintage of approximately 9.2 million pieces, making it widely available. San Francisco Morgans are broadly collected across the date run, and the strong doubling on the second 8 makes VAM-21 an accessible example of obverse hub doubling. The III2 18 obverse is shared across multiple 1882-S VAMs, so reverse classification and die marker specifics are essential for separating individual specimens within this attribution group.
