1881-S VAM-39

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in October 1981, the 1881-S Morgan Dollar VAM-39 is classified "Doubled 18-1, Dash Under 8" with die pairing III2 21 - C3a (cross-reference 186). Morgan Dollars were struck in 90% silver from 1878 through 1904 and 1921, designed by George T. Morgan. The 1881-S is a perennial collector favorite, often found in high grades due to its history in Treasury vaults and bank rolls. Doubling on VAM-39 concentrates in the date: the first 1 is doubled at top right; the first 8 is doubled at the top inside of its lower loop with a short die chip inside the upper loop at approximately 11 o'clock; the second 1 shows doubling at the left side of its vertical shaft; and the second 8 has a distinctive dash just below its lower loop. The dash under the lower 8 is the most visually diagnostic feature for rapid attribution. This die appears in a documented emission sequence: obverse paired with 1881-S VAM-39, VAM-45, and VAM-88; reverse paired with 1881-S VAM-27, VAM-39, and VAM-80. The 11 o'clock die chip in the upper loop of the first 8, combined with the dash under the second 8, provides the clearest identification path.
