Description

John Baumgart's January 2006 discovery of the 1881 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar VAM-18 revealed a variety featuring doubled digits 8 and 1 alongside a distinctive raised dot on the numeral 8. The first 8 shows doubling at the top outside of its upper loop, where a secondary impression traces the curve above the primary element. The second 8 carries a raised dot on the left side of its upper loop — likely originating from a small pit or defect in the die surface that transferred as a tiny raised bump onto every coin struck from this die. Die markers further confirm attribution: a die chip sits above Liberty's eyebrow, and a horizontal gouge cuts across the tail feathers on the reverse, providing two supplementary diagnostics on different sides of the coin. Philadelphia struck a substantial number of Morgan Dollars in 1881, generating the die population from which this variety emerged. Baumgart's identification demonstrates how small features like the raised dot on the 8 — easily overlooked on casual inspection — serve as definitive attribution points when combined with the doubled date elements and the eyebrow chip.
