Description

Discovered by George Mallis in February 1974, the 1880-S Morgan Dollar VAM-23 presents a combination of S/S Top repunching and a Doubled 80 in the date. The S mint mark shows a repunch with a spike visible at the top left serif, confirming the secondary impression above the primary. Both the 8 and 0 in the date are doubled, making the date area particularly rich in die-produced detail. This variety shares its obverse die with VAM-69 and its reverse die with VAM-9, placing it within a documented die pairing network for the 1880-S issue. The 1880-S Morgan Dollar is one of the most extensively researched dates in the VAM system, with dozens of documented die varieties. Struck in 90% silver at San Francisco, the issue is widely collected, and VAM-23's combination of mintmark repunching and date doubling makes it a multi-feature variety of particular interest.
