1880-P VAM-22

Description

Discovered by Dave Borofski in November 1973, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-22 under classification III2 22 with a C3a reverse, titled Doubled Date. The obverse displays doubling across the entire date with varying intensity on each digit. The 1 is faintly doubled below the top crossbar and at the left bottom of the lower crossbar. The first 8 shows faint doubling at the top left side of both loops. The second 8 is strongly doubled across the bottom and faintly at the top inside of the lower loop and the bottom outside on the right and left sides of the upper loop. The 0 is tripled at the bottom left and right sides next to the field and at the top surface on the left. The reverse is a normal C3a die without notable features. The graduated intensity of doubling across the four digits, ranging from faint on the 1 and first 8 to strong on the second 8 and tripled on the 0, makes this variety particularly interesting to study as it reveals the mechanics of the misaligned hubbing event. Borofski's early 1970s discovery places VAM-22 among the first generation of documented 1880-P Morgan die varieties.
