Description
1880-P VAM-18 Doubled 1-80 Discovered by Bill Fivaz, January 1973. Revision September 2003 by Jack Lee. Revision Aug. 2011 by Scott Hamilton. 18(revised) III2 18 · C3a (Doubled 1-80) (178) Obverse III2 18 – Doubled 1-80 with 1 upper crossbar, right 8 on lower left outside of upper loop and right outside of lower loop with bulge at top right of lower loop, and 0 at top left and right outside and lower left inside. Ear slightly doubled at right inside and bottom outside. Reverse C3a – Normal die Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: There are numerous repunched dates in 1880-P Morgans, making attribution difficult. This VAM has slight doubling below the upper crossbar of the '1', the second '8' is doubled on the left outside of the upper loop and the right outside of the lower loop. The zero has probably the best die marker, with extra metal at the bottom inside at 6 o'clock. The reverse is the normal, featureless C3a die.
