1880-P VAM-12

Description

Among the foundational discoveries in Morgan Dollar variety collecting, the 1880-P VAM-12 was identified by Leroy Van Allen himself — co-creator of the VAM classification system — in June 1966, making it one of the earliest documented VAM varieties. Classified as III2 11 - C3a with die pairing number 181, this variety carries the designation "Doubled 1-80." The obverse (III2 11) presents doubling on three of the four date digits: the 1 is doubled above its bottom crossbar, the 0 shows doubling on the right inside with faint doubling also visible at the top left and right outside, and the second 8 is doubled at the bottom left outside of its upper loop. The 8 in 1880 showing no documented doubling in this context suggests the hub displacement vector was oriented in a direction that minimized its effect on the first 8's geometry while producing measurable shifts on the surrounding digits. The reverse (C3a) is documented as a normal die with no significant anomalies. Community commentary notes that this obverse die was used on both VAM-12 and 1880-P VAM-43, demonstrating that the same doubled obverse die was paired with at least two different reverse dies during its service life — a common practice at the Mint where obverse and reverse dies were treated as interchangeable components. The Morgan Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1880 from 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. Leroy Van Allen's discovery of this variety in 1966 predates the publication of his comprehensive catalog with A. George Mallis by several years, placing VAM-12 among the pioneering observations that would eventually grow into the vast system cataloging thousands of Morgan and Peace Dollar die marriages.
