Description

1880-P VAM-1A Knobbed 8 Die Break Discovered by Mildred Rezabek, June 1966. Revision September 2000 by Herb Zepke This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM. Do I have a VAM-1A or a VAM-39/a? Ask the Professor '''1A'''(revised) '''III2 1 ยท C3a (Broken 8, Die Break Wreath Bow) ( ? ) I-3 R-5''' '''Obverse III2 1 โ€“''' First 8 has a vertical die crack on right side showing as a line below and large knob die break at top with die crack continuing up into hair and neck. '''Reverse C3a โ€“''' Horizontal die break through lower part of wreath bow and continuing to right through first leaf cluster. '''COMMENTS: Nov 2011 Leroy states "We don't list 1A anymore- has been divided into 1A1 no break but die gouge wreath bow and 1A2 with break and gouge.''' 1880 VAM-1A Knobbed 8. This 1880 die was used to the point of breaking and a large crack formed from the rim through the right side of the first 8 in the date. This crack widens as later coins were struck and the knob on the top of the 8 grows larger. Very late die states with a large knob are highly desirable. The 1A1 is the same obverse die as the knobbed 8''',''' 1A1 is the early die state of the knobbed 8, confirmed by Leroy in an email dated October 2011. So only two obverse dies were used with the Die Break Wreath Bow.
