1880 (O) Morgan Dollar - VAM-33
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Martin Field in September 1980, the 1880-O VAM-33 is classified as III2 24 with a C3a reverse and die pair 176, designated "Doubled 80, Small O." The obverse shows the second 8 doubled slightly at the top left and right outside, while the 0 is doubled slightly at the top and right outside plus the lower left inside—a multi-digit, multi-directional doubling pattern that requires careful examination to separate from the closely related 1880-O VAM-23. In fact, collectors should be aware that every examined example of VAM-33 has turned out to be VAM-23, and the two appear to be the same variety. This significant attribution note suggests that VAM-33 may eventually be delisted or formally merged with VAM-23 in future VAMWorld revisions. Until that determination is finalized, both designations remain active. The Small O mintmark further aids attribution, distinguishing this die marriage from 1880-O varieties struck with the larger O mintmark punch.
