Description

Revised by Scott Hamilton, this 1880-O Morgan dollar variety bears the classification III2 1 with a C3b reverse and is formally designated Missing Rear Hair, Clashed Obverse n, Reverse M. The obverse die shows evidence of a die clash, with a faint partial incuse impression of the lowercase n from the word In on the reverse appearing next to Liberty's neck edge. The reverse die likewise carries clash evidence in the form of a faint raised designer's initial M from the obverse, visible above the d in God. This die was formerly cataloged as 1880-O VAM-1C before being reclassified. The designation was further refined from VAM-2B to VAM-2B2 in June 2011 to distinguish it from the VAM-2B1, which lacks the clashed n on the obverse and the clashed M on the reverse. Collectors should verify both clash transfer marks to confirm the 2B2 attribution, as the presence of both the incuse n and the raised M together is essential for proper identification. New Orleans Morgan dollars from 1880 are well studied, and this variety adds a clash-driven layer of interest for die-state specialists.
