Description

Discovered by Martin Field in December 1978, VAM-24 for the 1880 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated as a Doubled 880 variety under the plate identification 24 III2 18 - C3a (Doubled 880) (176). The obverse die, classified III2 18, shows the first 8 doubled at the top and right inside of the lower loop, the second 8 doubled at the top left and right, and the 0 doubled at the lower right inside — three date digits exhibiting distinct doubled impressions from hub misalignment. The reverse die is classified C3a. Commentary in the VAM records notes that specimens attributed to VAM-24 may in fact all represent VAM-24A, suggesting a potential reclassification or die-stage relationship between the two catalog entries. Morgan Dollar collectors working with 1880-O varieties should be aware of this ongoing attribution question when examining specimens. The 1880-O date is prolific in VAM attributions, reflecting the heavy production and multiple die pairs employed at the New Orleans Mint during this period of the Morgan Dollar series.
