Description
1880-O VAM-21 8/7 Check Mark, Ear Discovered by Henry Dierkoph, November 1977. Revised (10-2021) Brent Fogelberg. This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM. 21 III2 16 · C3a (8/7 Checkmark, Ear, Doubled 880, Motto, Alligator Eye) (176 ) Obverse III2 16 – 8 re-punched over 7 in date. Lower serif of 7 on surface of left side of right 8 upper loop as a checkmark set high. Vertical line on side of lower loop opening at upper right. Faint short ear at top right outside of upper loop. Doubled 880. Slightly doubled left 8 at top and right inside of lower loop, right 8 at lower left outside of upper loop and 0 at lower left inside. E PLURIBUS UNUM doubled strongly at top of letters and 7 left star and 4-6 right stars doubled towards rim. Slightly doubled hair front, LIBERTY band front and upper nose profile. Die scratch on eye front giving appearance of alligator eye. Reverse C3a – Slightly doubling of A-F-AMERI and top leaf cluster of right wreath towards rim. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # 1880-O VAM-61 was Eliminated. # There are known samples clashed but no letter transfer. # Appears to have been duplicated with the [[1880-O VAM-42A listing.
