Description

CARSON CITY MINT — RENUMBERED VARIETY: Originally cataloged as VAM-7 when discovered in 2010, this variety was renumbered to VAM-2C in April 2025 to better reflect its die classification within the 1879-CC Morgan Dollar series. The Carson City mintmark commands a significant premium among Morgan Dollar collectors due to the Nevada mint's limited production capacity and romantic Old West associations. Classified as 7 III2 2-C3b, the obverse features doubled 18 and tripled stars with a CC mintmark set left and tilted left on the reverse. Die markers show clashes weakened from polishing on both sides, a small die chip below the jaw, and a vertical line at the jaw and neck junction on the obverse. On the reverse, clashes are similarly weakened from polishing, and the G in GOD may be filled by a die chip. The 1879-CC saw limited mintage at the Carson City facility, which operated intermittently from 1870 to 1893. George T. Morgan's silver dollar design, struck in 90% silver, is particularly prized bearing the CC mintmark. Collectors should note the VAM-7 to VAM-2C renumbering when consulting older references.
