Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - P-1728a is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It belongs to George T. Morgan's prototypes for the new silver dollar of 1878. Roger Burdette's archive research shows that at least 50 pieces of J-1550a and J-1550 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. It is a second die pair of the J-1550 design, struck in silver, which Pollock does not list; on it the wheat leaf under the R has been polished away, the L of LIBERTY is polished and the cotton blossoms are doubled. Four are known. NGC lists it separately as P-1728a. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Judd-1550, Pollock-1728A, Adams-Woodin 1559 and Taxay EP1093.
