Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1552 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It belongs to George T. Morgan's prototypes for the new silver dollar of 1878. Roger Burdette's archive research shows that at least 50 pieces of J-1550a and J-1550 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the last transitional design, with seven tail feathers, five berries on the olive branch, no initial M in the ribbon bow and AMERICA further from the wing tip; Breen dates the striking to February 25. Adams and Woodin say three were struck, and three are confirmed. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1729, Adams-Woodin 1561 and Taxay EP1095. Cataloged as PCGS #61913.
