Description

The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1553 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It belongs to George T. Morgan's prototypes for the new silver dollar of 1878. Roger Burdette's archive research shows that at least 50 pieces of J-1550a and J-1550 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the last transitional design in copper; the single known example passed through the Hull, Brand and Farouk collections. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1730 and Taxay EP1096. Cataloged as PCGS #61914.
