Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1550b is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It belongs to George T. Morgan's prototypes for the new silver dollar of 1878. Roger Burdette's archive research shows that at least 50 pieces of J-1550a and J-1550 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the first prototype in copper, from two die pairs (Pollock-1724 and Pollock-1726); just over a dozen are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1724 and Pollock-1726, Adams-Woodin 1560 and Taxay EP1094. Cataloged as PCGS #11110.
