Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1551 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It belongs to George T. Morgan's prototypes for the new silver dollar of 1878. Roger Burdette's archive research shows that at least 50 pieces of J-1550a and J-1550 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the second prototype in copper; seven are confirmed, all from one obverse die. Pollock-1728B allows for a copper example from the other die, which USPatterns.com has not confirmed. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1728, Adams-Woodin 1560 and Taxay EP1094. Cataloged as PCGS #61912.
