Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1550a is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It belongs to George T. Morgan's prototypes for the new silver dollar of 1878. Roger Burdette's archive research shows that at least 50 pieces of J-1550a and J-1550 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the first prototype, a dollar-size copy of the J-1509 half dollar, with fan-shaped joins where the wings meet the eagle's body. It was struck from two die pairs (Pollock-1723 and Pollock-1725); USPatterns.com counts some three dozen in silver. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-5. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1723 and Pollock-1725, Adams-Woodin 1559 and Taxay EP1093. Cataloged as PCGS #61911.
