Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1564 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of three goloid dollar designs William Barber made in 1878 with an obverse from 1877. Goloid was an alloy of gold, silver and copper patented by Dr. Wheeler Hubbell, meant to make a smaller, lighter silver dollar. About 15 to 20 are known in silver and goloid combined, and none has been confirmed by metal analysis. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1755, Adams-Woodin 1569 and Taxay EP1106. Cataloged as PCGS #61926.
