Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1562 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of three goloid dollar designs William Barber made in 1878 with an obverse from 1877. Goloid was an alloy of gold, silver and copper patented by Dr. Wheeler Hubbell, meant to make a smaller, lighter silver dollar. USPatterns.com calls this the most polished of Barber's three goloid designs of 1878; over a dozen are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1753, Adams-Woodin 1568 and Taxay EP1104. Cataloged as PCGS #61924.
