Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1561 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of three goloid dollar designs William Barber made in 1878 with an obverse from 1877. Goloid was an alloy of gold, silver and copper patented by Dr. Wheeler Hubbell, meant to make a smaller, lighter silver dollar. USPatterns.com does not believe a silver example exists. Judd lists it in silver with a reeded edge. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1752, Adams-Woodin 1567 and Taxay EP1103. Cataloged as PCGS #61923.
