Description

The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1558 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of three goloid dollar designs William Barber made in 1878 with an obverse from 1877. Goloid was an alloy of gold, silver and copper patented by Dr. Wheeler Hubbell, meant to make a smaller, lighter silver dollar. Silver (J-1558) and goloid (J-1557) examples together number about two dozen. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1750, Adams-Woodin 1565 and Taxay EP1100. Cataloged as PCGS #61920.
