Description

The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1557 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of three goloid dollar designs William Barber made in 1878 with an obverse from 1877. Goloid was an alloy of gold, silver and copper patented by Dr. Wheeler Hubbell, meant to make a smaller, lighter silver dollar. Goloid (J-1557) and silver (J-1558) examples together number about two dozen; one tested at 6% gold, 89% silver and 5% copper. It is struck in goloid with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1749 and Taxay EP1099. Cataloged as PCGS #61919.
