Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1556a is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's competing dollar design of 1878, whose obverse copies his 1877 half union; early sale catalogs called it Barber's rejected dollar. Burdette's research shows that at least 50 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. The white metal example, probably unique, passed through the Col. Green and Farouk collections. It is struck in white metal with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1744 and Taxay EP1092. Cataloged as PCGS #61918.
