1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1556
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1556 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's competing dollar design of 1878, whose obverse copies his 1877 half union; early sale catalogs called it Barber's rejected dollar. Burdette's research shows that at least 50 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. The single known aluminum example is in the Durham Museum; the Pollock-1735 and Pollock-1739 aluminum listings do not exist. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1743, Adams-Woodin 1564 and Taxay EP1091. Cataloged as PCGS #61917.
