Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1555 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's competing dollar design of 1878, whose obverse copies his 1877 half union; early sale catalogs called it Barber's rejected dollar. Burdette's research shows that at least 50 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the final version in copper, from three die pairs (Pollock-1734, 1738 and 1742). It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1734, Pollock-1738 and Pollock-1742, Adams-Woodin 1563 and Taxay EP1090. Cataloged as PCGS #61916.
