Description
The 1878 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1554a is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's competing dollar design of 1878, whose obverse copies his 1877 half union; early sale catalogs called it Barber's rejected dollar. Burdette's research shows that at least 50 were struck between December 1, 1877 and January 2, 1878. This is the first version, without the six-pointed stars at 4 and 8 o'clock on the reverse; four are confirmed. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1745, Adams-Woodin 1562 and Taxay EP1089. Cataloged as PCGS #12234.
