1878 Morgan Dollar - Reverse of 1879 - VAM-228-6
Error
Description
This listing represents VAM-228-6 paired with the Reverse of 1879 tail feather arrangement, distinguishing it from the same variety paired with the Reverse of 1878. Classified as II 2 with a C3a reverse and carrying a rarity rating of 193, the variety is titled Broken Fourth Right Star, Normal Third Reverse, Dot Above E, and was discovered by Mark Witkower. Die 6 within the VAM-228 family is identifiable by a tiny raised dot above the E in LIBERTY on the obverse, serving as the quickest diagnostic for this pairing. A single vertical polishing line in the hair space above the lower right hair vee confirms the obverse die, while the reverse carries a single horizontal polishing line between the left bow ribbon and the left wreath stem. Because 1878 dates were part of the master die, no variation in date position exists. The existence of this same obverse and reverse die pair under both the Reverse of 1878 and Reverse of 1879 parent strike types reflects the complexity of the 1878 Morgan dollar series, where multiple reverse hub types were employed during the first year of production.
