The 1873 Three Cent Patterns page groups the three-cent pieces dated 1873 in the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from the regular nickel three-cent dies (J-1260 and J-1261) and silver three-cent dies (J-1262 and J-1263) in copper and aluminum. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint again struck complete sets from the regular dies of every denomination in copper and aluminum for sale to collectors. J-1260a, a nickel piece on a broad planchet, is regarded by USPatterns.com as a broadstruck mint error. The Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 ended the silver three-cent piece.
