Description
Completing the 1873 three-cent pattern series in copper-nickel, J-1263 tests the composition that would be the denomination's sole surviving alloy after the Coinage Act abolished the silver trime. The copper-nickel three-cent piece would continue in production for another sixteen years, making this final pattern of the Trade Dollar era a preview of the denomination's exclusively base-metal future.
