1871 Proof Dime Pattern - J-1074
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Leading the sixteen-variety dime pattern group for 1871, J-1074 features a Seated Liberty obverse with the standard legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and a wreath reverse enclosing ONE DIME, struck in the standard silver alloy. The dime occupied a critical position in the Trade Dollar era testing program as the smallest denomination certain to survive the coming Coinage Act reforms. Unlike the doomed half dime and two-cent piece, the dime would emerge from the 1873 legislation with its future secured.
