Description
Concluding the gold dollar pattern group with a nickel striking, J-1025 renders Longacre's Indian Princess design in the hardest metal employed for 1870 patterns. Nickel's superior hardness compared to gold meant that the dies could transfer their finest details with exceptional clarity, producing sharper definition in the feathered headdress and wreath than gold strikings typically achieved. The nickel gold dollar pattern is among the rarest pieces in the 1870 program, with very few examples surviving to document this intersection of a gold denomination design with a base metal composition.
